LEARNING IS
SOCIALLY NON-THREATENING...
AND SOCIAL SAFETY IS
VISIBLE
WHEN STUDENTS...
PARTICIPATE WIthout FEAR
Socially safe students participate without fear of peer judgement. These students feel like they belong to a community (and classroom), and interact freely with teachers and other students. Socially safe students physically, emotionally, and cognitively invest in learning and this investment is seen and heard in a classroom.
JUSTIFY PARTICIPATION BEHAVIORS
THAT DO NOT MATCH THEIR INDIVIDUAL AND PEER IDENTITY
Socially safe students can justify their participation even if the participation challenge their self-concept or social identity.
VERBALLY RATIONALIZE PARTICIPATION
Socially safe students articulate and verbalize WHY they are participating or engaging. Engagement has social costs and socially safe students can rationalize their participation behaviors to their peers.
CONNECT TO THEIR PEERS AND TEACHER
Socially safe students develop attachments to their peers and teachers. They support peers when their peers take learning risks.
